Milli Starr is known for exquisite craftsmanship and a vintage-inspired elegance that complements a modern wardrobe. Laura possesses over 25 years experience in fashion history, design, and construction and has worked as a milliner, but also as clothing and textile consultant and conservator, vintage dealer, retail manager, and theater costume designer. In teaching, Laura aims to preserve millinery traditions and ensure a high standard of craftsmanship continues as new milliners join the industry.

This course ..

Learn how to roll edges and sculpt sinamay into a turban-inspired headband. Several draping techniques will be demonstrated including basic twist, sailors knot and braid. Requires a balsa utility block (studio head) or pinnable dome crown.

In this class, students will learn how to work with sinamay straw on the bias, roll its edges for a fray-free finish, and drape and twist it over a simple hat block to create a stylish headband. This turban-inspired headband was a Milli Starr best-seller for years and Laura is excited to finally share the technique in a synchronous online format. Students will find this a versatile technique that can be used to create a variety of headbands and turbans, as well as trims for hats.
