Phillip is known as one of Australia's Master Milliners. One of the last Australian milliners to receive traditional workshop training, Phillip developed his craft whilst working in Australia and in London.
Whilst in London, Phillip's work with Europe's largest Costumiers, Berman and Nathan saw him undertake projects for Euro-Disney, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. A stint with English outfitter Herbert Johnston provided exposure to a celebrity clientele including Kylie Minogue, Joan Collins and Joanna Lumley just to name a few.
Phillip Rhodes Hats have been stocked in major stores across Australia since 1992 alongside Phillip’s made-to-measure practice.
Phillip continues to combine fashion headwear with an aligned career in the theatre. He is the house milliner at the Melbourne Theatre Company, Victoria Opera and The Australian Ballet.
Images of Phillip's fashion hats have been featured in Australian Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Marie Claire.
About the Workshop
Putting elements together creatively is easier said than done.
Mixing materials and textures; hand-made and purchased trimmings; sinamay, silk and veiling; to create a confection of a cocktail hat or simply a spectacular trimming or headband.
In a big session of repurposing commonplace millinery materials, this class will see students shred and then gather-up veiling into ribbons.
Unravel a straw braid hat or braid from the roll and together lets make and process some skeletal leaves. Process unstiffened sinamay strips into organic forms before creating a wire framework to house jewelled elements ,sinamay, straw and veiling into a billowing wreath of loveliness.
Bonus skills of veiling the hat and making simple wire prongs for personalised, expert fitting, always ensure a professional finish that adds dollar value to all millinery.
Add a sinuous fabric or ribbon bow as the final punctuation.
A myriad of tricks and technique in one fun class.
