Silk Abaca - UK
Silk Abaca is the blend of silk and abaca fibres and is a relatively new fabric to the millinery trade. This vibrant material is made by weaving the processed stalks of the abaca tree, a banana palm from the Philippines, through silk.
It is really smooth, strong and fluid, is easy to colour with silk dyes and has an incredible sheen.
The abaca fibres are the warp threads run lengthwise or longitudinal yarns which are held stationary in tension on the weaving frame.
The silk thread is on a shuttle which runs transverse and is called the weft which is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp.
The finished fabric is strong and has a unique sheen.
Silk Abaca when twisted and shaped creates amazing trims.

Whilst this colour was a lovely dark navy, a tone I could not find from other suppliers, do check out the width of the fabric is appropriate for your project. The silk abaca I purchased from BeUnique was significantly narrower than most of the product available from other UK suppliers. This meant that rather than using a portion of what I had purchased for the piece I was working on I had to use it all.
